Explore Ellis Island | NYC Activities
Exploring Ellis Island is a popular NYC Activity and a great option when guests at our NY Hotel are wondering What to do in NYC.
Ellis Island is one of the most historically important NYC Attractions. If you’re wondering What to do in NYC then consider visiting this iconic place.
About Exploring Ellis Island:
For some, exploring Ellis Island is just a way to spend an afternoon. For millions of others, it is a chance to retrace the steps of their ancestors. From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island was the busiest immigration center in the country. During the time it was in operation, more than 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island on their way to the American dream.
Today, visitors can learn about some of those who came to the United States from around the world. Tours will give you the chance to follow the story of an immigrant and learn how they fared after they left Ellis Island. If you had family who entered the country through Ellis Island then this NYC Activity will be especially meaningful.
The American Family Immigration Center holds records that will help you piece together the story of your family. You will find 25 million archives to explore. You might even find a photograph of the ship that brought your family to this country as the archives include photographs of 900 ships. See your relative’s signature, learn if they had any trouble at the entry port, and much more.
Visitors are welcome to Explore Ellis Island on their own, but guided tours are also available. Ranger-guided tours are free and last about 30 minutes. Another option is the Hard Hat Tour of Ellis Island’s Hospital Complex. This 90-minute tour takes visitors through parts of the hospital that treated immigrants upon their arrival. Tickets for the Hard Hat Tour are $25 and are available by calling 877.523.9849.
Guests at our Manhattan Hotel should add this NYC Activity to their itinerary – especially if they have never visited this Attraction in New York. Planning a visit? View our New York Attractions Guide to learn about other can’t-miss things to see in NYC.
