About the St. Patrick’s Day Parade:
A tradition that pre-dates the founding of the country its held in, the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade holds the distinction of being the 2nd oldest parade for the Irish saint (Boston’s 1st was in 1737) in the United States. The first St. Patrick’s Day Parade held in New York City took place on March 17, 1762, thirteen years before the first Battle at Lexington and Concord that signaled the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Both locals and guests at our Manhattan Hotel will line the streets to enjoy this NYC Event
Originally held in Lower Manhattan, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade now starts in Midtown at 44th and 5th and ends on the Upper East Side at 79th and 5th. In keeping with the old ways, the parade honoring the Patron Saint of Ireland is reviewed by the sitting Archbishop from the step of St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
Each year a Grand Marshal presides over the parade. The Grand Marshal is typically someone chosen from the church, a city or state official, or a member of law enforcement or the military. Sometimes it may be a prominent New Yorker or a public figure.
Early in its history, the parades were organized by Irish Regiments of the British Army, and the parade is still escorted by a regiment of Irish soldiers to this day, only now it’s the U.S. Army National Guard’s “Fighting 69th” Regiment instead of homesick Irish patriots.
This NYC Event is comprised of members of various Irish societies, schools, Irish language groups as well as tier one marching bands, bagpipers, high school bands and of course, politicians. To this day, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is still the grandest and most honored parade in New York City. The NYC Event remains pure to its origins and does not allow any floats, automobiles, or commercial entities to march in the parade.
